Let's talk about Profhilo...

Picture
When I hit 30 nearly two years ago, I made a goal to focus more on skin-based treatments. Having been a provider of profhilo treatment for nearly two years, earlier this year, I decided to take the plunge and undergo a course of Profhilo treatments myself. So what is it, will I trade it in for my beloved toxin and how does it differ to fillers

What is Profhilo? It's not a filler or a toxin.

Profhilo is dubbed the "injectable moisturiser" and named by many beauty editors as their secret weapon for youthful and glowy looking skin. Profhilo is a series of injections that integrates into the tissues restoring levels of hyaluronic acid found in the skin. With age, our skin's natural hyaluronic acid decreases, meaning we get an increase in laxity and loss of general youthful plumpness. Profhilo aims to target skin laxity, correcting the appearance of crepey and sagging skin and promoting radiance and hydration.

Why do I love it?

As I have moved into my 30's, my priorities with my treatments and skincare have changed. I still love my toxins for smoothening out muscle movement that creates fine lines and wrinkles and my fillers for subtle lip augmentation or tear trough filler. Profhilo does not replace these treatments; however, it works as an adjunctive treatment. As my skin and face changes with age, I have realised the importance of skin quality and texture. Perhaps it's one of those things you only notice once it's starting to go and take for granted when younger. Think of your skin as the most fundamental aspect of your facial aesthetics; good texture creates a glowy appearance, minimal laxity prevents sagging and folds and means dermal fillers can hold and lift with more effect. I love this treatment for the boost and radiance it's given my skin.

So how does this differ to filler?

Whereas most fillers available are made of hyaluronic acid, these are cross-linked to create a gel which, once injected, stays in place added volume to the treated area. Profhilo, however, has no volumising effect. Instead, it has a bio-remodelling effect to improve skin quality, acting as a scaffold within the skin to counteract laxity and improve texture and elasticity. As Olivia Falcon, The Time's beauty journalist described it perfectly "Imagine your skin is a bed: rather than plumping up the pillows (the effect fillers have on the skin), Profhilo increases the thread count of the sheets (your skin)."
How does it work, and what is bio-remodelling?

Injectable hyaluronic acids have a more significant benefit than those that are delivered in serum form as they provide a greater concentration of hyaluronic acid to the skin's dermis. Profhilo has an incredibly high concentration of pure form synthetic hyaluronic acid which can be targeted, by injection, into the upper layers of the skin using a small needle. Due to its runny texture, once injected, the hyaluronic acid spreads throughout the face, neck or hands. It attracts water to it, helping the skin to look younger and plumper. It triggers the skin to create new collagen and elastin by the process of bio-remodelling assisting the skin to combat signs of ageing such as fine lines, dullness and crepiness.

What does treatment involve and how soon do you see results?

Profhilo is injected into ten predetermined sites in the face, neck or hands which are measured and marked out before treatment. Treatment is relatively quick, with each injection delivered over 20 seconds. Unlike with dermal fillers where the product is injected to create an ideal correction or augmentation of the tissue, like with toxin treatments a bolus of product is delivered. As a result, this can initially make a small, bee sting like, lump in the skin where it has been injected which naturally smoothens down over the following 24 hours. Downtime is minimal, and makeup can be applied 8 hours after the procedure.

Results are not instant with Profhilo as treatment requires two sessions, 30 days apart. Results are typically seen 30 days after the second treatment as the skin works hard to produce new elastin and collagen to give a youthful, plump appearance. We recommend that treatment is repeated every six months.
